Hey guys! This is gonna be the best summer EVER! You know I need to start making some money to save
for college, right? Well, you’ll never guess what just happened - I got a phone call, worked some MAGIC,
and now we all have summer jobs at Lava Springs Country Club!! How cool is that? We’ll all be working
together, and be together all summer! I promise!
GABRIELLA
I am super excited to spend the summer with everyone! Especially you, Troy...
TROY
It’s gonna be you and me all summer.
GABRIELLA
Promise?
TROY
Here’s my promise.... (produces locket, puts it on Gabriella. Sharpay, who is eavesdropping, comes over...)
SHARPAY
I thought you were moving again.....
GABRIELLA
Mom promised me we’re staying until graduation! Isn’t that great??

Ah, yes, my dearest Sharpay. Looking forward to another summer of brimstone and gall....
SHARPAY
Whatever. . . . Did you take care of everything like we discussed? (Whispering, so Ryan might not hear). You
know, starts with “T” and rhymes with boy? ..... Troy...?
RYAN
Uh oh.
FULTON
Ah, yes. Perhaps your highness would want to know, however, that....
SHARPAY
(Cutting him off)
Excellent! (Snaps her fingers in the Sharpay style to call forth her social followers)
Where is my chaise and lemonade with Splenda?! Everyone! I am pleased to announce this year’s
Midsummer Night’s Talent Show Theme. (All take their places in awe:) REDEMPTION!
RYAN
Oh man..... Sounds like Sharpay is relapsing...

(Gabriella brushes right past Sharpay to Troy, and they hug. The other Wildcats follow....)
RYAN
(Off of Sharpay’s reaction.....) Uh oh..... Thar she blows!!!
SHAPRAY
FUL-TON!!!!! Get over here before I tell Daddy to get a new manager for HIS RESORT!
FULTON
(Who has waited for this) I had a hunch you would want to speak to me.
SHARPAY
What is this Montez creature and the other Wildcat idiots doing here!?! I said to just hire TROY BOLTON,
not all of East High!
FULTON
Mr. Bolton insisted that I give his friends jobs as well, and you told me by any means necessary to make sure
Troy worked for Lava Springs this summer.....
SHARPAY
Yeah, well, whatever, I want you to fire them! NOW!
FULTON
I cannot legally do that without just cause! Alright, alright...maybe if I make their jobs difficult
enough.....they’ll quit! (Sharpay and Ryan exit; Fulton addresses the Wildcats, blows whistle)
You have five seconds to fall in over here, Wildcats! 5-4-3-2-1 - You’re lucky, Ms. Nielsen!
Now, you saw the kitchen during your tour....
CHAD
What a mess! I feel bad for the folks who have to clean up that jawn!
FULTON
.....and I have assigned you all to the kitchen. First task is the cleaning of this kitchen! It had better shine like
the top of the Chrysler building in one hour, or else . . . CAPISCE? (Stunned silence) I would move if I were
you! You now have 59 minutes and 52 seconds, or you are all fired! (Whistles and Exits)
TAYLOR
OK, that man officially scares me. If he is our boss, this is gonna be one looonnng summer.
What is up with this, Troy?
CHAD
Yeah! That guy is wack! And . . .ahem . . Sharpay’s Dad owns this place!? Sounds like trouble up in here, daawg!

Ah----ha!!! Oh - my. I am impressed! Nicely done, Wildcats! (Exits. Sharpay and Ryan sneak on,

Hey Gabriella - I wrote a song, inspired by you and Troy - I was thinking we could all perform it in the
Midsummer Night’s Talent Show!
GABRIELLA
That sounds great, Kelsi! What do you think, Troy?
TROY
Yeah, I think we could do it . . . What’dya say, Wildcats? All for one....
ALL
....and one for all!!
KELSI
That sounds like a song. . . . excellent!
GABRIELLA
(Playing with Locket...)
Promise, Troy?
TROY
I promise, Gabriella! We’ll definitely have the best song of the Talent Show!!
(Sharpay almost faints! Opens her cell phone, and runs off, dragging Ryan behind her)
GABRIELLA
OK Kelsi, let’s give it a try!

(Fulton enters, followed by Sharpay and Ryan)
FULTON
Attention, attention all. Mr. Evans, Sharpay’s father, owner of this fine establishment, and signer of my
paycheck has decreed that Mr. Bolton, you are hereby promoted to golf pro . . . (Ryan reacts) . . . you are now
granted access to all facilities of the resort at any time, you will be given a golf cart, and a whole new
wardrobe. Oh - and you will now receive a salary - DOUBLE - of what you would have received with the
kitchen staff. (other Wildcats react)
SHARPAY
Wow! Troy, that is wonderful news! I told Daddy ALL about you, how athletic you are, and how talented a
singer you are . . . OH! And that reminds me - he invited his friends from the University of Alberqueque to
see the Talent Show - you know - the folks who decide all the big (magic word..) ...SCHOLARSHIPS....
TROY
Scholarships....??
SHARPAY
Yes, scholarships! They are really looking forward to hearing me and you sing Kelsi’s song for the Talent
Show. Isn’t that exciting? Just think! You sing with me, and you’ll land that scholarship for sure! (Crowd
erupts, including Ryan!)
TROY
Whoa.....I dunno.....wow....but I promised Gabriella....
RYAN
Wait a minute! What about our number together, Sharpay!?
SHARPAY
Change of plans, baby brother - that’s showbiz! Oh, Troy, it would be such a shame if you lost that
scholarship! I would hate to tell Daddy you turned him down. . . .
Just think - all you have to do is sing with me.....Promise me Troy. Promise?
TROY
(Looks back and forth between the groups)
Um, I . . promise, Sharpay.
(Fulton curtly exits. Ryan leaves, depressed. Lights change (“Time” passes).)

This is the best summer ever!
CHAD
Yeah, whatever man. Best summer - for YOU. YOU promised we would all be together all summer, bro!
Now, you suddenly get some fancy promotion, AND you ditch us for the talent show! Man, Sharpay is
playing games with you! Come on, gang. Let’s get back to work.
(Group agrees - they all exit, Troy follows, ad libing “Wait!” except for Gabriella, who approaches Sharpay ).
GABRIELLA
We need to talk! How can you do this? Stealing Kelsi’s song, Hurting your own brother, Manipulating Troy?
SHARPAY
Oh please! You’re just jealous because I won.
GABRIELLA
Look. I get it, OK? You want to be the queen of this resort, I get it! But you better step away from the mirror
long enough to see all the damage you have done in getting your crown, your majesty!
(Sharpay storms off. Troy enters)
TROY
I don’t understand. They should be happy for me. I gotta do what’s best for me. I have dreams,
and Sharpay is giving me a chance that comes once in a lifetime.
GABRIELLA
No, Sharpay is pulling off the caper of a lifetime. Troy, you should get that scholarship because you deserve
it - not because of Sharpay’s games. You promised me, Troy.... remember? You and me? The team? Your
friends? All summer?
TROY
Why are you holding me back!? Why can’t you see what an opportunity this is?
GABRIELLA
(Sighing) Just remember. If you act like someone you’re not, pretty soon that’s who you become. Working
together sounded like fun, but the reality is quite different - YOU’RE different.
Troy, I’m sorry. (Taking off the locket) I have to go.
TROY
Gabriella! (She exits. We enter “limbo”, spot on Troy).

Sharpay?
SHARPAY
Troy! Hurry and change! Our song is soon, and I want to make sure EVERYONE sees me -
and you together - up there! That way, we’ll have the best song of the Talent Show and win the Star Dazzle
Award! Oh, and your scholarship thing, too. Let’s go. Move it!
TROY
Sharpay, I am not singing with you.
SHARPAY
What? Troy, we’re doing Kelsi’s song - I made her give it to me and change the key - it’s a duet - that means
its for two people, Troy.
TROY
Sharpay! No. I’m sorry. It’s not a duet anymore. It’s a solo. Break a leg. (She begins sobbing. Fulton enters.)
Mr. Fulton, I want to thank you for the opportunity, but I want my old job back. I belong with the Wildcats. I
promised them we would be together.
FULTON
(Impressed) As you wish, Mr. Bolton. (Troy exits) Five minutes, Ms. Evans. (Notices her sobbing. Turns to
leave....feels guilty. Turns to Sharpay.) You know, your makeup is running. You look like a depressed raccoon.
There are hundreds of people out there, waiting to see you. Now, unless you are planning to look like Lady
Gaga, you had better fix your makeup and get ready.
SHARPAY
Troy’s not singing with me anymore! Now, I don’t know WHAT I am going to do! You better get out there!
Tell Daddy I’m sick, or I lost a limb or something....
FULTON
I will do nothing of the sort. You dug this hole, young lady, now figure out how to get out.
SHARPAY
FULTON! You go fix this, or, or....or you’re fired!
FULTON
You......?!?! Fire ME!?!?! Young lady, this has gone far enough! You think that people are merely playthings
that you can manipulate to do your conspiring evil plots! Well, I am sick of dealing with your ridiculously
overinflated and desperately insecure teenage ego! People .... have....feelings! And when you stop and
remember that BEFORE you begin your plots to take over your social universe, you might find ... oh my
gosh, dare I say .....FRIENDS to help you out! Now get out there and sparkle! CAPISCE!?
SHARPAY
Capisce..... (He exits - She continues sobbing)

Hey guys. I want to apologize. I was acting like a big jerk.
CHAD
A really big jerk.
TROY
I just came from Sharpay’s dressing room. I told her I am not singing with her. Also, I want you to know, I
asked Fulton for my old job back. I belong with you guys, even if you don’t speak to me for the rest of the
summer. I am really sorry, guys. I should remember to keep my promises - and be careful when I make
them!
CHAD
It’s cool. I’ve missed you, bro! (Hug. Wildcats “AWWWW!!!”)
RYAN
Troy, as much as I wanted Sharpay to fail after she broke up our act, she is really losing it. She is talking to
her picture of Liza Minelli, and refuses to come out of her dressing room. The crowd is getting
restless....Sharpay is my sister, and I care about her. I don’t wanna see her crash and burn.
CHAD
Technically, you did promise Sharpay, too, Mr. Promise-Keeper.
Plus, I think it is a good punishment for you to sing with her!
TROY
I guess you’re right. But you all better hurry! Did you forget?
I promised that we ALL would perform, didn’t I? What team?
ALL

. . . . Liza! What am I going to do!?!
TROY
Sharpay....?
SHARPAY

I have been acting really stupid. My team, my friends and Gabriella mean much more than some
scholarship, and I let them down. I lost Gabriella because I didn’t keep my promises. I am going to keep my
promises. I promised you I would sing, so here I am.
SHARPAY
You would do this...for me?
TROY
That’s what friends do. On one condition though - the Wildcats sing with us!
SHARPAY
Yes! Oh ...... What a loser I have been. Hurting others to get what I want ...... maybe I should step away from the
mirror. (Gets an idea.) Give me your cell phone. Oh, and get changed. Oh, and you have to learn a new song.
TROY
What??
SHARPAY
GO! Get the Wildcats together. Hurry! (He exits, she dials) Hey, it’s not Troy....It’s Sharpay - NO please don’t
hang up..... It’s really important.

(Transition to Talent Show. Fulton has been keeping the crowd occupied - sort of.)
FULTON
......and in the fall there was a brand new peacock petting zoo placed where the old dining hall used to
reside.... (KELSI rushes in, whispers in his ear) .... ah yes, it is about time. Now, ladies and gentlemen, I give
you Sharpay Evans, singing with, well, who knows at this point....

So, I stepped away from the mirror.

Things really do change in the summer - and I suppose I did too.... Friends?

Friends. (They hug. Sharpay turns Gabriella around to Troy)
TROY
Thanks for coming back. Now the summer can really start - I want to spend all the time with you.
GABRIELLA
Promise?
TROY
Bet on it. (Gives her the necklace, they kiss. Wildcats react).
SHARPAY
Ryan, I’m really sorry for breaking up the act. You have always been there for me - even when I didn’t
deserve it. You’re the best brother ever! (Hug, crowd collective “Awwww”)
FULTON
Ms. Nielsen, I do believe you mentioned having a slam bang finale for this here shindig!
KELSI
Sure thing, Wildcats! Hit it!
