Online Registration for 2019 Summer Stage is now open!

We are pleased to offer a new and more complete registration process.

  • You will be asked to create an account. Please remember your password. You will be able to access your account in the future to register additional children or for other Upper Darby Recreation programs. You will not have to re-enter your information each time.
  • We are offering payment plans to help our Summer Stage families. You can pay 50% now and pay the remainder in two installments.
  • You may pay immediately by credit card or you may mail a check or bring cash to the Box Office within 10 days.
  • You may also request a scholarship and pay nothing until you are notified about the scholarship acceptance.
  • There is a $2 service fee for each transaction and 3% will be added for credit card transactions.

Theater Bugs will develop their creativity and imagination through four exciting theater classes:

• Singing • Dance • Acting • Improv and Storytelling

The sky is the limit when it comes to developing basic performing technique, building bright characters, and finding “your own unique voice” as a first-time Summer Stager.

Magic Makers Program

Finishing 5th or 6th grade

(Formerly the “Apprentice Program”)

Magic Makers will further develop techniques of singing, dancing and acting and at the end of the three week session will perform their very own Performance Showcase! Their journey will include learning theater terminology, getting a peek behind the scenes to see how a theater production works at Summer Stage, and rehearsing as a cast of storytelling players.

Rising Stars Program

Finishing 6th or 7th grade

Rising Stars are put to the challenge of performing in a fully-staged musical for their family this summer. Fine tuning characters, creating a theatrical world, and storytelling through a professional script are just a few exciting elements! This program, is a stepping stone to becoming a Children’s Theater performer. Students who have completed the 2018 Magic Makers program may register after completing 6th grade. New students must have completed 7th grade to participate.

Monday – Friday: 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM

  • First Session: June 20 to July 12

(no classes on July 4 or 5)

  • Second Session: July 15 to August 2

Upper Darby Summer Stage Children's Theater Program

Participants must be finishing 8th-11th Grade in 2019
or have completed the 2018 Rising Stars program.

Cast members must be available 9 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday

Participants rehearse a fully staged and costumed children’s musical and will perform for thousands of people. Auditions are not required for participation but are necessary for casting leading roles. Membership in the Children’s Theater program is open to students who have completed Rising Stars or who are finishing 8th grade. Rehearsals are held in the morning from 9 am to 12 noon and in the afternoons from 1 to 4:30 pm. There will be one weekend rehearsal for each show.

Participants attend when they are needed for rehearsals. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be given at the first cast meeting for each show. Parents are expected to help their child assume responsibility for attending rehearsals and learning lines. Please do not schedule family vacations, camps, summer school or medical appointments during rehearsal times.

Participants must be 14 years of age or finished 8th grade by June 15, 2019. Members who have completed one full session of the Rising Stars Program may enter Children’s Theater at age 13 but are limited to one show. Participants will be assigned to a cast after registration and will be notified by mail the week of April 29. Please do not call the Box Office for assignments. First meetings for each cast are on the first date listed below.

Children’s Theater Fees: $185 for residents ($150 for second show), $345 for non-residents ($220 for second show)

*Note: Registering for Children’s Theater guarantees a place in the program. Show preferences are not guaranteed and sometimes preference of show can not be accommodated.

A resident is a student who meets the residency requirements for the Upper Darby School District.

Scholarships: A limited number of financial need scholarships are available. Request a scholarship application while registering.

Technical Theater Program

Finishing 8th Grade – 11th Grade

Few programs in the region offer the opportunity for young people to gain the scope of knowledge and the hands-on experience of working behind the scenes at Summer Stage! Seven full-scale productions in one summer!

Members of the Technical Theater Program are immersed in the backstage world and will learn skills in carpentry, painting, sound, lighting and backstage management, technicians create scenery, props and special effects for our seven major productions. The Technical Theater program is open to students who are finishing 8th grade or in high school. An interview with the Technical Director is a requirement for admission to the program.

Technical Theater Fees: $175 for residents, $275 for non-residents

Mainstage Program – BIG FISH!

18 years old – 28 years old

The pinnacle of Summer Stage participation is the Mainstage Program. Open to performers 18 years or older, Mainstage raises the bar to a professional level in the production of a Broadway style musical. Reviewers have called Mainstage shows, “Virtually perfect” and
“Mesmerizing.” Auditions and a strong commitment to excellence are required of Mainstage performers.

Participants must be finished 12th grade. Those who finished 10th grade who have participated in Summer Stage Children’s Theater are also eligible to audition. Auditions are scheduled for Sunday, June 2. Check the website at www.udpac.org for audition songs and more information.

Mainstage Fees: $20

Casting in Mainstage is by audition. There is no specific registration form for the Mainstage Program.
