June 12, 2014 – Drexel Hill, PA – The 2014 summer season officially begins for 700 young adults this Monday, June 16 at 7:15 pm! That’s when the participants of the 39th season of Upper Darby Summer Stage enter the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center to meet others in their cast, rekindle friendships, and sing “To Fill the World with Love” the theme song of the program for the past 39 years.

The lyrics of “To Fill the World with Love” remind the participants to make the most of life, strive to be brave and strong and true, and to fill the world with love by sharing their talents. Therefore, from the very start of each season, participants learn that participating in Upper Darby Summer Stage is much more than securing the leading role, it involves accepting others, learning to give back to the community, and aspiring to be responsible and accountable.

Young adults from throughout the Delaware Valley participate in Upper Darby Summer Stage. The program is known as one of the nation’s oldest and most successful youth theater programs and since 1976 young people from dozens of regional schools come together onstage and backstage to create magical theater for the whole community. The seven unique musical theater productions from July through mid-August are on the list of summer activities for many families throughout the region. 30,000 ticket-holders enjoy the productions each summer.

The staff of over 140 professionals is lead by Executive and Artistic Director Harry Dietzler who founded the program in 1976. Staff members are trained to not only share their knowledge of the theater – from scenic and costume design, to lighting design, to choreography and vocal performance – but to provide a caring environment where the participants can develop strong personal relationships. In 39 years, countless friendships have been formed and many have found true love, resulting in marriage!

The programs offered at Upper Darby Summer Stage are varied and designed for different age groups. There are two programs for middle school-aged children (Apprentice Program and Rising Stars), plus six unique Children’s Musicals for high school students. The Mainstage production features young people up to the age of 28 and is full-stage production with live orchestra. In addition, members can participate in the Technical Theater program (14 – 18) as well as a Dance Troupe (11 – 25) , Cabaret (16 – 5) and Directors’ Workshop (16 – 28).
