The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is the city’s leading hospital for pediatric care. CHOP was founded in 1855 and it was the first hospital in the nation that catered exclusively to children. CHOP runs countless community outreach programs, including community asthma prevention, a 24/7 poison control hotline and a health program for homeless mothers and their children. This summer, they plan to expand their efforts with help from Summer Stage.
Toy donations flow into CHOP during the early winter months as the holidays approach. In the humid heat of summer, donations tend to drop off. To help bring joy to its patients all year long, CHOP is partnering with Bachmann Trains, Upper Darby Summer Stage, the Delaware County Library System and you.
Known as the “To Fill the World with Love” Toy and Book drive, Summer Stage will be collecting new young adult books and new toys. We will not be able to accept any used items. The books should be for a young adult reading level. A collection bin will be placed outside before every Children’s Theater performance this summer. In exchange for your donation, you will receive a bookmark from the Delaware County Library System and your name will be entered into a drawing to win a train set provided by Bachmann Trains! One set will be given out at every Children’s Theater performance this summer.
I have a personal investment in this toy and book drive. “Don’t play with scissors” is a simple idiom that has a storied past for me and my family. When I was in second grade, just around Christmas time, I decided it would be an excellent idea to test this age-old adage. Needless to say it did not end well. I cut my foot (specifically my Achilles tendon) and had to go to the ER for stitches. While there, my mom introduced me to the Chet Gecko book series. The books kept me so distracted that I didn’t even notice that I was getting stitches. I was comforted by literature, and I can’t imagine being in the hospital without any kind of entertainment.
There are children in need throughout the community year-round – Since they cannot come see the magic of Summer Stage, help bring it to them! When you come see a Children’s Theater show this summer, consider bringing a new toy or book to help the kids of CHOP.
