The new musical is performed by the professional actors of Theatreworks USA on Friday, February 20th
February 6, 2015, Drexel Hill, PA – Skippyjon Jones, a new musical based on the bestselling book by Swarthmore’s Judy Schachner, will be performed by the professional actors of Theatreworks USA at Upper Darby Performing Arts Center on Friday, February 20 at 7:30 PM. The 60-minute musical is recommended for children ages 4 and up.

Skippyjon is a big-eared Siamese kitten with a vivid imagination and an unusual life goal—to be a chihuahua like his dog friends. Skippyjon’s imagination takes him on adventures, such as becoming a Spanish swordsman named Skippito Friskito, the greatest canine sword fighter in old Mexico! Filled with delightful music and loads of adventure, Skippyjon Jones will have young audience members laughing and singing along!
Author and illustrator Judy Schachner, a resident of Swarthmore, introduced Skippyjon Jones to the world in 2003, and has since been nominated for and won several awards for her children’s books. In 2004, Skippyjon Jones won the E.B. White Read Aloud Award, which honors books that are felt to embody the universal read aloud standards. In 2005, the book won the Ladybug Picture Award, Armadillo Readers’ Choice Award, and the Washington Children’s Choice Picture Book Award, and in 2006 won the Colorado Children’s Book Award.
Theatreworks USA has a distinguished history of not only providing young audiences with their first taste of the performing arts, but also giving young actors, writers, directors, and designers an early opportunity to work in this field. A list of Theatreworks USA alumni reads like a veritable “who’s who” of theatre: director Michael Mayer (American Idiot, Spring Awakening, Thoroughly Modern Millie); writers Marta Kauffman and David Crane (TV’s “Friends”), Lynn Ahrens and Steven Flaherty (Ragtime, Once on This Island), Laurence O’Keefe & Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde: The Musical); and actors F. Murray Abraham, Henry Winkler, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson also got their start with Theatreworks USA.
