Why Your Child Will Learn Life-Long Skills at Upper Darby Summer Stage

By: Marie McVeigh, former participant and current Summer Stage staff member

I have called Upper Darby Summer Stage my summer home for more than a third of my life. I began the program at age 13 as a Rising Star participant, performed for many summers in Children’s Theater and in Mainstage, and today I am a staff member. I was also a proud member of the Upper Darby Shooting Stars and got the chance to spread the magic of Summer Stage all year.

“Whether your child is interested in performing, technical theater, or making costumes, Summer Stage is an amazing place to grow.” – Marie McVeigh

My friends outside of Summer Stage question why I seem to practically disappear over the summer because I spend all of my time at Summer Stage. I keep coming back because of the amazing people I have met. I have met my best friends here. I also have met talented, hard working staff members and learned from each and every one of them. At Summer Stage I have grown as a choreographer and artist working in Children’s Theater and Dance Troupe.

I feel incredibly grateful to be on staff at the place that helped me grow as an actor, singer, and especially dancer. For three summers I was an assistant choreographer for Children’s Theater and have been mentored and taught by professionals in the biz. This summer I am ecstatic to be the head choreographer for our sixth children’s show, “Beauty and the Beast Jr.”! I am also very excited to grow in my marketing skills as the Public Relations and Content Manager this summer!

It is hard to express just how much I have learned since I started at Summer Stage.  What I’ve learned goes far beyond acting skills. I have learned how to work as a team member and the importance of collaborating with others. I have learned how to take direction and what proper theater etiquette is. I have learned the importance of hard work and the power of imagination. I have learned to be a Tigger instead of an Eeyore even when it seems impossible. Most importantly I have learned as our anthem says, “To Fill the World With Love.”

How do we define the magic of Summer Stage?  Upper Darby Summer Stage is not just a place to see a great show but also a place where young minds can share their talents. Our staff is dedicated to fostering each student’s unique talents and putting on excellent productions. Whether your child is interested in performing, technical theater, or making costumes, Summer Stage is an amazing place to grow. At Summer Stage your child will grow as an artist but more importantly, like me, he or she will learn lessons that will carry them through their whole life.
