The concert opens with “Das Lied von der Erde” (“The Song of the Earth”), a composition written by the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler between 1908 and 1909 and comprised of six songs for two singers who alternate movements. Guest soloists are mezzo-soprano Barbara Dever and tenor Robert Cart. Next, the orchestra will perform the Overture, Dance of the Polovetsian Maidens, and Polovetsian Dances from Alexander Borodin’s (1833-1887) opera “Prince Igor.” Many consider the opera “Prince Igor“ to be Borodin’s finest work.

Guest soloist Barbara Dever is an American mezzo-soprano opera singer who has appeared with Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, Zubin Mehta, Nello Santi and James Levine. She has sung at the Washington Opera, New National Theater (Tokyo), Michigan Opera Theatre, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, La Scala, Vienna State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Virginia Opera, and the Cincinnati Opera.

Robert Cart is an American operatic tenor who has performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Philips Collection. Cart has served as Chair of the Department of Music and Theatre Arts at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, Dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts at Rowan University in New Jersey and currently holds the position of Director of the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University in New Jersey.
