Upper Darby Summer Stage announces registration for its 2021 season! 

We are grateful to the Mayor and Council of Upper Darby Township and the Superintendent and Board of School Directors of the Upper Darby School District for supporting Summer Stage 2021.

Summer Stage will offer its full program of Performing Starts Classes, Children’s Theater, Mainstage and Technical Theater but with smaller numbers to accommodate social distancing. 

All protocols regarding Covid safety will be followed including wearing of masks, social distancing, cleaning of facilities and limiting numbers in each rehearsal area. 

Because of the limited numbers participants will be limited to one show. 

Performances are currently planned to be recorded on the stage and livestreamed to the audience.

Theater Bugs

Age 10 or completed 4th Grade

Calling all Performing “BUGS!” Have you ever wanted to be a first time Summer Stager? Well this is your chance! The Theater Bug program welcomes our newest Summer Stagers! 

As a Theater Bug you will explore the world of theater, develop your creativity and imagination, and discover new talents in four exciting theater classes (Acting/Improv, Storytelling, Music, Dance). The sky is the limit it comes to developing basic performing technique, building bright characters, playing theater games, and finding “your own unique voice” as a performer. We hope you will “Dig in” and “spread your wings” with us this summer!

Three-Week Sessions, Monday – Friday 8:30am to 11:30am

Session 1: June 18 – July 9 (no class July 5) 
Session 2: July 12 – July 30

Total of 40 Students Per Session

Theater Bugs Program Fees:

$200 for residents* | $300 for non-residents


Magic Makers Program

Age 11 or completed 5th Grade

Magic Makers will further develop techniques of singing, dancing and acting and at the end of the three week session will perform their very own Performance Showcase! Their journey will include learning theater terminology, getting a peek behind the scenes to see how a theater production works at Summer Stage, and rehearsing as a cast of storytelling players.

Rising Stars Program

Ages 12 and 13 (completed 6th and 7th grades)

Rising Stars are put to the challenge of performing in a fully-staged musical for their family this summer. Fine tuning characters, creating a theatrical world, and storytelling through a professional script are just a few exciting elements! This program is a stepping stone to becoming a Children’s Theater performer. Students who have completed the 2020 Magic Makers program may register after completing 6th grade. New students must have completed 7th grade to participate.

Three-Week Sessions, Monday – Friday 1:00pm to 4:30pm

Session 1: June 18 – July 9 (no class July 5) 
Session 2: July 12 – July 30

Total of 40 Students per session

Rising Stars Program Fees:

$200 for residents* | $300 for non-residents

* A resident is a student who meets the residency requirements for the Upper Darby School District.
Scholarships: A limited number of financial need scholarships are available. Request when registering.

Upper Darby Summer Stage Children's Theater Program

Participants must be finishing 8th-11th Grade in 2021 
or have completed the 2020 Rising Stars program.

Cast members must be available 9 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday

Participants rehearse a fully staged and costumed children’s musical and the onstage performance will be streamed online. A decision has not been made yet if limited audiences may attend performances.. Auditions are not required for participation but are necessary for casting leading roles. Membership in the Children’s Theater program is open to students who have completed Rising Stars or who are finishing 8th grade. Rehearsals are held in the morning from 9 am to 12 noon and in the afternoons from 1 to 4:30 pm.  Some rehearsal sessions may be held virtually.

For safety of our participants and to allow for COVID safety measures, cast sizes are limited.  Students will only be assigned to one show.

Participants attend when they are needed for rehearsals. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be given at the first cast meeting for each show. Parents are expected to help their child assume responsibility for attending rehearsals and learning lines. Please do not schedule family vacations, camps, summer school or medical appointments during rehearsal times.

Participants must be 14 years of age or finished 8th grade by June 15, 2021. Members who have completed one full session of the Rising Stars Program may enter Children’s Theater at age 13 but are limited to one show. Participants will be assigned to a cast after registration and will be notified by mail the week of May 10. Please do not call the Box Office for assignments. First meetings for each cast are on the first date listed below.

Children’s Theater Fees: $225 for residents, $375 for non-residents

*Note: Registering for Children’s Theater guarantees a place in the program. Show preferences are not guaranteed and sometimes preference of show can not be accommodated.

Technical Theater Program

Finishing 8th Grade – 11th Grade

Few programs in the region offer the opportunity for young people to gain the scope of knowledge and the hands-on experience of working behind the scenes at Summer Stage! Seven productions in one summer!

Members of the Technical Theater Program are immersed in the backstage world and will learn skills in carpentry, painting, sound, lighting and backstage management. Technicians create scenery, props and special effects for our seven major productions. The Technical Theater program is open to students who are finishing 8th grade or in high school. An interview with the Technical Director is a requirement for admission to the program.

Technical Program Fees: $250 for residents, $350 for non-residents

Dates: June 21 through August 14,  9 AM to 4 PM

Dance Troupe Program

10 years old – 28 years old 

Dance Troupe is a dance-based performance showcase! Summer Stage participants of all ages and levels can have the opportunity to explore, improve, and excel in their dancing skills throughout the summer.  Dance Troupe culminates in a recital-like performance at the end of the season with a variety of styles and levels displayed.  Our staff of choreographers are all part of the Summer Stage family, and have either been participants themselves or have been creators for other Summer Stage productions.

Participants must attend at least one of the scheduled audition dates listed below and can expect to be placed in 1-3 dances based on their style preferences, skill sets, and conflicts! Each dance will have 4 or 5 rehearsals throughout the summer during the 4:45 – 6:45 time slot.

Mandatory Attendance Dates


Participants are required to attend at least one of the following audition dates:

  • Advanced Auditions (Lyrical and Tap) – Tuesday, June 22 at 4:30pm
    This day is recommended for more experienced dancers, and those who come on this date are welcomed but NOT required to attend the General Auditions on Thursday.
  • General Auditions – Thursday, June 24 at 4:30pm
    This day is mandatory for any dancer who did NOT attend Advanced Auditions on Tuesday


Participants are required to attend all of the following dates

  • August 9 Dry Tech Rehearsal  4:30pm – 6:30pm
  • August 10 Tech Day  12:00pm – 6:30pm (dancers may not be required for entire time, details will be finalized and sent in advance)
  • August 11 Afternoon Dress Rehearsal / Evening Performance 12:00pm starting (dancers may be called as early as 12:00pm, details will be sent in advance)

Fees: $15 for residents, $25 for non-residents

Mainstage Program – Tuck Everlasting

18 years old – 28 years old

The pinnacle of Summer Stage participation is the Mainstage Program. Open to performers 18 years or older, Mainstage raises the bar to a professional level in the production of a Broadway style musical. Reviewers have called Mainstage shows, “Virtually perfect” and “Mesmerizing.” Auditions and a strong commitment to excellence are required of Mainstage performers.

Participants must be finished 12th grade.  Auditions information to follow. Check the website at for audition songs and more information.

Dates: One seven-week session from June 14 through July 31. Monday thru Thursday evenings, 7 PM to 10 PM

Fees: $25 for residents, $35 for non-residents
